Exercise and Chronic Disease

Definition

Chronic diseases are defined broadly as conditions that last 1 year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both.

Our mission is to help adults in the Folsom area take control of their physical and mental health through a consistent exercise program and healthy nutritional habits. According to the CDC, 6 in 10 Americans have at least 1 chronic disease, and 4 in 10 have 2 or more chronic diseases! The CDC also reports that 70% of deaths and 75% of all healthcare costs in the United States can be attributed to chronic illness such as heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, arthritis, etc.

Living with chronic illness can negatively impact a person's physical and mental health. For example, people living with arthritis may experience physical consequences such as chronic pain. They may also experience mental consequences such as depression or anxiety. And in some scenarios, living with arthritis may impact a person's ability to work.

Most chronic diseases, including arthritis, depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and more, are significantly improved through diet and exercise!

The simplest, and most cost effective, way to improve your health and decrease your risk of chronic disease as you get older is to implement an exercise program that is consistent, gets progressively harder, and targets your individual needs! Anybody can start a walking plan at home today and begin decreasing the impacts of chronic disease on their health. Anybody can fill up a milk carton with rocks and begin a resistance training plan in the comfort of their own home.

Starting and maintaining a consistent resistance training program can reduce the debilitating impacts of arthritis and low back pain, manage or prevent type 2 diabetes, increase lean muscle mass, resting metabolic rate (how many calories your body burns to stay alive), cognitive abilities, self-esteem, and decrease body fat. Resistance training can improve cardiovascular health as well by reducing blood pressure and reducing the prevalence of low-density lipoproteins in your blood.

A consistent cardiovascular program has incredible impacts on chronic disease too! Cardiovascular training can positively impact mental health by reducing anxiety and depression, improving mood, boosting self-esteem, enhancing cognitive function, and promoting better sleep quality. It can also reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, improve weight management, and much more!

Exercise sounds like a miracle drug to me!
